Acquisition: Tschabalala Self
Tschabalala Self’s Submission, 2025 marks the first acquired work by the artist to enter the Buxton International Collection. The work exemplifies Self’s distinctive approach to constructed figuration, where layered textiles, patterned surfaces and painted forms coalesce into complex meditations on identity, embodiment and the politics of representation.
A significant addition to the Collection, Submission reflects Self’s ongoing inquiry into the tensions between the observed, the imagined and the self-defined body. As the artist notes ’Submissions is not only about control, submission can be an act of love, or acceptance.’ The Work resonates with the Collection’s focus on embodied and abstracted figuration - seen in artists such as Daniel Richter - and on practices that explore interior, affective and social worlds as exemplified by artists like Tal R.
