Acquisition: Mark Manders
Bonewhite Clay Head with Vertical Cloud, 2024, incorporates many of Manders’ key concerns, including material tension, the paradoxical co-presence of the organic and the rational, and the mythic and the logical. The work sits within his primary conceptual enquiry – the architecture of the mind – as part of the Self Portrait as a Building series.
As such, this piece represents a significant contribution to his practice: emblematic of his core themes, and rendered with an incredibly poetic combination of delicacy and rupture.
It aligns closely with the current collecting strategy, which includes Abstract Abject, embodied and abstracted figuration, and explorations of psychological or interior worlds. Manders’ contorted psychological self-portraits resonate with other key works in the Buxton International Collection, including Mike Parr’s Volte Face (12), 2022, and Huma Bhabha’s Fury, 2021.
